The Comfortable Classic: The Desert Boot

Some shoes stay with you for years. That's exactly how we feel about the Desert Boot. Whether travelling through warm climates, on safari in Africa, during summer hunts, or simply in everyday life, few shoes combine comfort, understated style, and versatility so effortlessly. That is why, as one of the very first products in our new Safari Collection, we set out to create a Desert Boot that reflects our own vision. A shoe that feels less formal than a classic leather dress shoe, yet is far more refined and timeless than a sneaker. A shoe you can wear just as naturally while travelling, strolling through town in the afternoon, or gathering around the table after a successful day's hunt.

Developed Together with Astorflex

Our search for the right manufacturing partner led us to Astorflex. The more we learned about the Italian workshop, the clearer it became that we had found exactly what we were looking for. For generations, Astorflex has been producing premium leather footwear using traditional craftsmanship, honest materials, and a commitment to lasting quality rather than short-lived fashion trends.

We quickly established contact, and many enjoyable conversations and countless details shaped the development process. Staying true to the saying, "Leave it to the experts," we entrusted the manufacturing to the Italian specialists and worked together to create our Desert Boot.

The story of the Desert Boot

The Desert Boot has its origins exactly where its name suggests: in the desert.

During the Second World War, British soldiers stationed in North Africa were searching for footwear that was lightweight, comfortable, and durable enough to withstand the hot, dry climate. Inspired by the traditional shoes worn by the local population, they adopted an ankle-high lace-up boot featuring soft leather and a flexible natural crepe rubber sole.

Its simple construction made it exceptionally comfortable and remarkably durable. After the war, the Desert Boot found its way into everyday life and became one of the world's enduring footwear classics—remaining virtually unchanged to this day.

Our Desert Boot

For our version, we use our signature oily nubuck leather, which already features throughout many products in our collection. It has a wonderfully soft feel while remaining highly durable, gradually developing a rich individual patina with wear.

The soft calf leather lining ensures excellent comfort and breathability. A leather footbed together with the removable insole provides additional comfort and allows the use of custom orthotics if required.

One detail was especially important to us: our Desert Boot should speak through its quality, not through prominent branding. For that reason, the Waldkauz logo is discreetly embossed only on the insole. The exterior remains clean, understated, and timeless—exactly as we envisioned it.

Those who wear the shoe know where it comes from. Nothing more needs to be said.

Like every authentic Desert Boot, its construction remains intentionally simple. Three pairs of eyelets create a clean silhouette while making the boot easy to lace, and the ankle-high shaft provides secure support. The flexible natural crepe rubber sole cushions every step, making the boot exceptionally comfortable even on long days on your feet.

Astorflex – La Scarpa Buona

Astorflex remains a family-owned company based in Castel d'Ario in northern Italy. Every pair is genuinely Made in Italy, crafted using vegetable-tanned Italian leather, natural rubber, and water-based adhesives—materials chosen for their durability and sustainability.

Their philosophy is summed up in the motto La Scarpa Buona—"The Good Shoe." It reflects their commitment to creating footwear that stands out not through fashion or flashy branding, but through honest craftsmanship, meticulous attention to detail, and decades of comfortable wear.

Another aspect that mattered greatly to us when choosing our partner was repairability.

Repairing and maintaining products has always been an essential part of our philosophy. Many of our bags, backpacks, and garments can be repaired in our own workshop, significantly extending their service life. Shoes, however, require the expertise of skilled shoemakers.

That made it all the more important to find a manufacturer who shares the same values. Astorflex offers a repair service for its footwear, allowing worn soles to be replaced and other components restored when necessary. This significantly extends the life of the shoes and turns a well-made boot into a companion for many years.

For us, sustainability is not about replacing products as often as possible, but about designing and caring for them so they can be enjoyed for as long as possible.

That is exactly the foundation we wanted for a shoe that feels just as at home on safari as it does during a summer hunt, at the traditional post-hunt gathering, or simply in everyday life. A shoe that grows more beautiful with every passing year—and one you'll eventually never want to take off.
